About Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis

Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, or IUPUI for short, it is an urban shared campus of Purdue University and Indiana University, located in Indianapolis, which is the capital of the US state of Indiana and the county seat of Marion County, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 799 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which makes it the largest city in the state, the 2nd most populated state capital, the most populated state capital east of the Mississippi River, the 3rd largest city in the Midwest and the 14th largest city in USA.

IUPUI was established long before its merger, in 1969. The creation of IUPUI was inspired by the Indiana Purdue Foundation in Fort Wayne, which was formed in 1958. The merger of the 2 largest university systems, which formed the Indiana Purdue Foundation, inspired the metropolitan and state government leaders to consider a same type of merger between the Indiana University professional graduate schools, Purdue University undergraduate extension center and Indiana University undergraduate extension center. The large campus, west of downtown Indianapolis, of the School of Medicine, was chosen as IUPUI’s site.

Through its various schools, the university offers its students more than 180 undergraduate majors, including 70 graduate and professional degrees. IUPUI’s School of Informatics, which was created in 2005, it is the only schools of its kind in the nation, IUPUI along with IUB hosting the 1st PhD program in USA, which offers health informatics, tracks in bioinformatics and human-computer interaction. Among the other schools from IUPUI, there are: Indiana University School of Dentistry, Purdue School of Engineering and Technology, IU School of Physical Education and Tourism Management and IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

The athletic teams from Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis are known as the IUPUI Jaguars, who compete at the Division I level in The Summit League, in various sports, including men’s soccer, women’s tennis, volleyball and men’s golf and basketball. The Jaguars have experienced success many times in the past years, including in 2001-2002, when the women’s basketball team was selected the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association to its Top 25 Honor Roll, including in the fall of 2002, when the whole athletic department from IUPUI has been by USA Today and the NCAA, for having the highest improvement in graduation rate in the country for its category.
